Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease with good treatment and preventive care can be helped with good old fashion oral hygiene mixed in with modern technology.

Back in the good old days “or” when I was a kid, we could not afford toothpaste or toothbrushes.  We used baking soda and salt on an old rag.  Another version I’ve heard is – “We’ll my mother and father used baking soda and salt and they kept all their teeth”

We know today premature tooth loss from periodontal disease is far more preventable than in the past.  At Healthy Body Dental we have products in the office that are natural and healthy that are easy to use and help to have a healthy mouth. Also I do believe with the use of baking soda used as a dentifrice is advisable for most adults.  I recommend it being freshly mixed for each use with medicinal 3% hydrogen peroxide to a pasty consistency and used twice daily- once in the morning and once in the evening.  This should be followed by warm salt water rinse consisting of 1 or 2 tablespoons of table salt dissolved in 6 to 8 ounces of water.

Persons on a salt free diet may want to rinse with fresh water rather than the saline rinse.  This technique should not considered a replacement of prescribed periodontal therapy,  but it should help to improve the oral hygiene and gingival health. Improvements are usually noticeable with in 1 to 2 days.  Initially, it does not taste as refreshing as conventional toothpastes, but the increase benefits offsets the taste difference.

If the gums become tender, brush with less scrubbing motion and/ or replace the peroxide with water in the mix.  Periodontal Disease disease accounts for the majority of tooth loss in adults.  This oral hygiene technique will help stop periodontal disease.
